Each lecturer has her own methods to teach students effectively. I have learnt many subjects at school and the class Teaching English method for young learners of Mrs. Trang Tran (lecturer in School of Foreign Languages, Thai Nguyen University) really makes me impress the most.
The first special thing in this class is that students have chance to be children as the name of the subject “Teaching English method for young learners”. In three lessons I have attended, I always feel elated, interested and enthusiastic without stress or boredom. Mrs. Trang Tran prepared a lot of activities for us to take part in and these activities were children‘s favorite games or songs such as “Simon says”, “Family fingers”, “Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes”….etc. The combination between learning and studying really created a funny and active atmosphere.
Mrs. Trang Tran also had an intelligent way to check students whether they prepared for the new lesson or not. She divided the whole class into some smaller groups and required each group to make a list of questions based on the theory on the textbook. Then she exchanged the question lists of all groups and they had to answer the question of the others. The more questions were answered correctly, the more preparation they did.
If almost teachers teach students about the theory first then instruct them to practise, Mrs. Trang Tran carried out it by an opposite way. Instead of introducing about the long and unintelligible theory, she practiced in front of her student how to teach vocabulary for children. She drew four objects on the board (plane, car, bear and doll) then read out loud the name of these objects slowly 3 times. After that she acted and called the name of actions referred to these objects (fly your plane, drive your car, hug your bear, and kiss your doll). After practicing many time, she required students to repeat and do after her. Next, she asked them to carry out without her instruction. And the last, she called some students to act as a teacher and teach some vocabulary as the ways she did before. Of course, after this method, we could understand and find out the theory about teaching new words for children without reading the textbook. Also, it was also a way for us to remember the theory forever.
Although I have just joined a few lessons of this interesting class but it is very meaningful to me. I could enjoy myself and had opportunity to live as a child again with funny moment. Moreover, with those intelligent teaching methods, I believe that all students can comprehend well and have a stable knowledge basis of teaching English methods to young learners.
