3 pedagogical competence factors required for a Foreign Language teacher

“To teach a foreign language, it is significantly essential for a foreign language teacher to have both good language competence and effective teaching skills trained through training process and fostered in teaching environment.”, said Dr. Ha Văn Sinh, senior lecturer of Faculty of Foreign Languages - Phu Yen University, also Director of Community Knowledge Development Foreign Language Center.

Dr. Sinh has participated in training and fostering foreign language teachers for 35 years. He has also spent 20 years establishing ad developing a team of teachers who have high pedagogical competence at one of the most professional foreign language center in Nha Trang City( Khanh Hoa province).
According to Dr. Ha Van Sinh, pedagogical competence of a foreign language teacher must include all the following factors:
Firstly, there is a close relationship between the ability to use a foreign language  through fluently using communications skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing; and the adequate understanding about the language and culture of that foreign language.
Secondly, the ability to teach foreign languages effectively includes thorough understanding about learners, and the capacity of creating positive language environment.
Accordingly, in order to constitute language teaching ability, each teacher must equip for himself/ herself some skills such as: describing and explaining the language system of the foreign language that they teach.
Teachers should have profound knowledge of principles, opinions about teaching and learning foreign languages, as well as the learners’ process of acquiring and developing the foreign language.
Specially, it is necessary for teachers to have complete understanding about Communicative Language Teaching – CLT to be able to effectively use modern textbooks and implement strategy for developing language proficiency for learners.
Teachers should be able to understand and use many different teaching techniques, including the technique of applying information technology in redaction and presentation - organizing activities in classrooms.
Teachers ought to understand clearly learners' needs and learning conditions to design lessons and evaluate effectiveness of lessons. Moreover, teachers need to also associate with the learning conditions to enhance foreign language competence outside classroom.
Teachers have proficient presentation skill, and know how to stimulate learning motivation and interaction by foreign languages between Teachers - Students or Students - Students in classroom.
Teachers use appropriate techniques in managing classroom, understand the common European framework of reference (CEFR), and know how to assess learners' language proficiency as well as have measures to assess accurately this proficiency of learners.
Thirdly, this is the ability to self-adjust to develop (self-evaluating teaching efficiency and trying improving), including the possibility of cooperation and sense of sharing.
The ability to self-assess efficiency of each lesson , find out what needs to be improved in order to discover and test improvements is one of differences between an experienced and inexperienced teacher.
To get this ability, foreign language teachers need to have both of above abilities, combining with classroom observation skills.
Ability to cooperate and share
Apart from three basic above abilities, foreign language teachers also need skills of cooperating, coordinating, and sharing with their colleagues along with career passion, organization skill, flexibility, and acumen to adapt with available teaching conditions.
The degree of success of each project or each plan of establishing and developing the team of lecturers depends on the degree of promoting the above possibilities of every teacher.
