Useful tips to learn English effectively, a post shared by Dr. M. Sakaguchi, a retired Educator

  1. Make a commitment of time to practice English outside of classtime
Find time outside of class to practice English writing, reading or speaking---on a regular basis. “Hours of exposure” is key to learning  a language; setting aside an hour or two in the evening or early morning on a regular basis to practice is helpful.
  1. Watch videos or movies (romance, musicals, action, mystery, nature) with closed captions
Watching films and videos is a great way to hone listening skills and vocabulary as it gives you a chance to practice English listening skills while reading what is being said in the captions shown. Have popcorn while watching.
  1. Read, read read---in English
Find travel information, poetry, books on favorite topics, and read one book or a magazine or newspaper in English a month, then as time permits, maybe one a week. Your vocabulary will grow in leaps and bounds---painlessly. If your library does not have many books in English, try on line sources especially magazines, newspapers, and transcripts from TV new shows.
  1. Don’t get hung up on Pronunciation
There are usually many ways to pronounce a word or phrase even if your teacher tells you there is only one good way. People from different English speaking  countries, or different regions in the USA have different accents and different ways of expressing something.  Learn standard English if you can, and if the word or phrase comes out with a Vietnamese twang when you use it, its OK.  Be bold and confident and speak in English as best as you can;  if your pronunciation doesn’t quite sound the same as a native English speaker, think that you have a Vietnamese accent---it might become fashionable and de rigueur.
  1. Friend an English speaker, practice chatting in English with them—on line or face to face.
This is a painless way to build confidence and vocabulary and pronunciation skills at the same time. Who knows---the friend you meet as a conversation partner may become a serendipitous  friend for life! Join a campus English club or international club, volunteer to be a guide for visiting international students---to make new friends. If you chat on line with a new friend be sure to use spellcheck if you can---it will let you know about misspelled words.
  1. Travel to an English speaking country if you can.
This is the best way to learn English and learn about the idiosyncracies and quirks of culture and living. If you cannot travel because you are broke and don’t have the money to do so yet; view travel videos and read travel books (the in flight magazine that airlines produce is a fun read.)
  1. Be self confident and have a sense of humor when practicing English
The important thing when learning English is to use it all the time or as often as you can. You will make funny and egregious mistakes when you choose to use the wrong word for a situation; you will make very unEnglish sounds when pronouncing a difficult word and the friend you are chatting with responds with a cackle or guffaw---laugh along with them. Don’t  be embarrassed.

IELTS Preparation: Get IELTS 8.0 with these suggested materials

  1. Background knowledge:
I think this experience will be suitable for those who are at intermediate level with good grammar and vocabulary. Although it is not a good choice for beginners, I hope you will have an appropriate orientation to prepare for your IELTS examination.
  1. Reading
  2. Some materials for practicing this skill( from low level to high level):
- IELTS Reading Test( by Sam Mccarter & Judith Ash): it consists of 10 reading tests with gradual difficult levels, but it doesn't mean that the first tests are easy. This book emphasizes in 2 types of IELTS exercises( one is easy and the other is difficult): True False Not Given and Matching Headings. The advantage of the book is its having the Answer Part providing detailed and accurate explanation.
This book is extremely important for those who don't have a good reading skill. You can ignore this book if your reading point is estimated to be at 8-8.5.
- IELTS Cambridge(7-9): Now we have IELTS Cambridge 10, but it doesn't have explanation. If you have much time, you should do practice tests in IELTS Cambridge. People having no time can ignore these books because they are not difficult.
–IELTS Practice Tests plus 1,2,3: It's compulsory for you to do them because they not only have accurate answers with explanation but also are similar to the real IELTS Test. Moreover, tests in these books are various and each book has from 5 to 7 tests.
–IELTS Recent Actual Test: In fact, I don't do any exercise in this, but someone mention that there are similar exercises in real IELTS test.
  1. How to practice?
I do not spend much time on this skill, but when practicing, you should pay attention to these things:
- Clock in 60 minutes, this way is to know what percentage you could do compared to the real exam.  In the beginning, just keep yourself comfortable although you do the test for more than 60', try to finish it carefully because this is the period to build skill, basis and ability of concentration. After that, you should try to do the test in 1 hour without hesitating or worrying.
- Don't write answers into the book, write them into the Answer Sheet. Getting used to transferring answers into Answer Sheet.  It is advised for you to print the model IELTS Answer Sheet .
- After doing the test, check the answers, avoid looking at the explanation, just check whether it is true or false , then continue doing the test again. Remember to read and do it carefully  in this 2nd time.
- It's necessary for you to understand why you make the wrong answers, then take note your mistakes to learn from them. Remember that learning from your mistakes is extremely important.
- You had better learn vocabularies relating to questions and answers in reading exercises. You don't need to learn all of them, but pay attention to those influencing your choosing answers.
  1. When you take the real IELTS test, you should :
- Keep calm
- Make sure each question you have done is completely right because there is no more time to check it again after you finish the test .
- When writing answers, make sure you don’t write answers by mistakes or make spelling mistakes.
-Part 2 is often considered as the most difficult task, so doing part 1 and 3 first will be better.
  1. Listening
  2. 1. Materials: like mentioned in Reading part above
  3. How to practise:
- Transcribe: listening and writing out are very effective to improve listening skill and spelling (common error in listening). Source to practice: from Podcasts of British Council. You just have to listen and write out what you have listened for 5 minutes. every day.
- Listen carefully: practicing listening numbers, addresses and names. If you have time, try to do all exercises in this book.
- I don't think movies or Youtube plays an important role in boosting listening points if you don't have much time.
- It's important to identify the reason why you cannot listen to English well. Maybe the lack of vocabulary or mispronouncing make you misunderstand the tapes. To improve this problem, you should learn vocabulary and try to pronounce correctly.
  1. When you take the real IELTS Test:
- Headphone quality is very good.
- Always pay attention to keywords
III. Writing
  1. Materials: The only book you need is IELTS Writing( by Mat Clark). It consists of some task 1 exercises and 114 task 2 exercises.
  2. How to practice:
- Read essays in the book and implement following steps( this way is suitable for those who don’t have much time):
+ Reading questions, underline keywords
+ Reading essays, explain meaning of some words
+ Underlining phrases
+ It is important to find out paraphrases of keywords in question of essay. This step helps widen your vocabularies with words having the same meaning (synonyms).
+ Making a list of formal words replacing for informal words used regularly+ From essays, summarizing outline of the article, learning important phrases and enhancing brainstorming ability.
+ Basing on what you have done above, writing an complete essay.
3.When you take the real IELTS test:
- Don't go to WC in writing test because you won’t have enough time.
- Doing task 1 first, then task 2.
In my opinion, to have a high point with task 2, you need to remember these tips:
+ Paraphrasing keywords in the topic first.
+ Making an outline first
+ Your writing should include words in the book of Mat Clark and complex structures...
+ Spending 3-4 minutes rereading your writing.
+Paying attention to your spelling
  1. Speaking
This is my weakest skill.
  1. Materials:
Your speaking will be better and better if you approach speaking materials at the suitable level. I recommend some important books as follow:
-  IELTS Speaking (by Mark Allen): This is the most important book.
- 15 days practice for IELTS. Speaking
  1. How to practice:
- Picking any book, reading question, answering it, then recording what you have spoken.   After that, listen to the record and check whether there are any mistakes to learn from experience.
- You just need to answer slowly when practicing, but avoid basic mistakes.
- It can be difficult in the first times, but then you will have a good speaking background.
  1. When you take the real IELTS Test,
- Being confident to speak in front of examiner.
- Using some academic vocabularies( from writing part) and idioms, along with fluent ideas. Remember to speak clearly and keep calm.
- Don’t hesitate when speaking.

The secrets to conquer the TOEFL iBT of a Vietnamese school girl winning 11 scholarships in the US

(Vietnam Education) - Dam Ngoc Kim Anh, a former student in Hanoi - Amsterdam high school has conquered 11 top Universities of America with an almost absolute score of TOEFL iBT.
Among 11 universities that Kim Anh has achieved scholarships, there are University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College, Cornell University ... (3 of 9 schools in the top honor Ivy League of America). So which secrets to obtain such a high performance?  Let meet this girl to learn how she conquered her TOEFL iBT.
Kim Anh shared about the process from preparing documents to reviewing for the TOEFL iBT test: “I didn’t prepare study abroad documents too early, just concentrated on preparation in class 11 - 12.
As for the TOEFL iBt preparation process  , Kim Anh revealed that it was not necessary to spend too much time on studying at many classes; the TOEFL iBT was really not difficult. To achieve high scores, Kim Anh got familiar with the test by using the book The Official Guide to the TOEFL test.
“You can also search for the free TOEFL iBT practice materials on www.toeflgoanywhere.org or try the TOEFL iBT mock tests - TPO (TOEFL Practice Online).
“TPO is was developed by Educational Testing Service (ETS) for experiencing the manner to do four exam skills as well as the "partial" atmosphere in the real examination room, and it cost only one-fourth of the price of the real test and the difference between scores was only 1-5 points, therefore after the mock test I could estimate my strong and weak points in each skills, then apportioning more reasonable time for each one. ", said Kim Anh.
Being excited with the topic about TOEFL iBT, Kim Anh shared her experiences about the exams specifically:
Easily overcome the Understand Reading Comprehension part
"You should not read the passage from the beginning to the end, just read the topic sentence then skim the whole one. The order of the questions often appears in the order of information in the text, so you should combine answering and reading carefully every part in the passage to save time. The general questions should be answered finally because at that time we have already had lots of information after completing the other questions.”
How to take advantage of scratch paper and win the Listening part
TOEFL iBT  allows contestants to use scratch paper and write the useful contents during the exam, so taking notes (note) is extremely important but it must be done properly, "When listening, you should not take notes everything due to the time limit; just rewrite the important words and remember them to answer the questions.
Particularly, although the lecture part is long and specialized, answering questions is not really difficult if you can take not the main detail correctly and concentrating on the images showed on the screen . The dialogues are also close to the daily life thus it is very easy to answer. However, you should pay attention to expressive nuances of the speaker as this point is always asked.
Avoid mistakes in the Speaking part
Time limit to prepare for the speaking part of the TOEFL iBT is only about 15-30 seconds, hence, you should avoid mistaking “ah, umm” mistakes when speaking.  It is not necessary for you to use complex structures, but it is completely important to concentrate on the use of grammar correctly. If possible, you can prepare yourself a few sample questions for each type of question. You ought to pronounce word stress correctly instead of worrying too much about how to speak the standard tone and accent of American. It is required for you to say something instead of being silent.
The simple formula for the Writing part
For the Writing part, a completely creative and ornate writing style is not necessary.  "You should follow the usual essay structure including 3 parts: the opening, body and conclusion. Use different sentence structures and pay attention to linking sentences and paragraphs together by conjunctions and coordinators in order to make the content between them become more diverse, coherent and logical.

Correcting popular mistakes made by Vietnamese students when speaking English

This post is aimed to both clarify some common mistakes made by Vietnamese students when speaking English and recommend students some tips to correct those mistakes to communicate in English excellently.
Thank and thanks
They seem to be very simple terms that we meet and use every day. However, the fact shows that lots of students cannot distinguish the usage of those words. Here are some examples:
Thanks you >>>>> Thank you
Thank for watching >>>>> Thanks for watching
Thank a lot! >>>>>  Thanks a lot1
The problem is that we use “thank” or “thanks” depending on the objects next to them. If the word “thank” has an object, we do not add “s” (thank you) and vice visa, we just use “thanks” when it has no objects (thanks, thanks so much, many thanks…).
  1. Almost, most, most of
Those 3 words are thought to share the similar meaning or to be equivalences of the others. However, it is completely wrong to use those 3 words carelessly without understanding clearly their grammar functions.
Firstly, “almost” has no connection to proportions. It does NOT mean “many”, “majority”, “nearly all”…..as we think. “Almost” is similar to “virtually”, “nearly” and is used to mention about time, measurement, size or progress of some process. For instance:
  • I am almost finished
  • She is almost 1 meter 70
  • It is almost July
Secondly, when we want to express about “nearly all”, we cannot use almost, in this case, the suitable term is “most”. “Most” is simply understood as over 50 % and it is used to talk about general facts. For example:
  • Most students want to find a suitable job after graduate
  • Most foreigners cannot get used to the traffic in Vietnam
Thirdly, if we want to mention about a special group without caring about the general facts, we need use “most of”. This phrase is used to talk about a proportion in a group that has been separated from a whole. We can see the differences between “most” and “most of” by following examples:
  • Most people like sandwich
  • Most of the people in this class like sandwich
Therefore, the phrase ‘the people in this class” is a group that has been separated. In addition, “most of” is divided into 2 cases that depending on the special group follow it. The first on is a progressive word following “most of” and the second one is without it. In the second case, we have to add “the” before that word. For example:
  • Most of my money is provided by my father
  • Most of the students in this class is from Thai Nguyen province
  1. Wait me some minutes
Many Vietnamese students are mistaken when making this sentence due to the habit of translating word by word from Vietnamese into English. The sentence “wait me some minutes” has two different mistakes.
Firstly, when talking about waiting for something; we should remember to add “for” after “wait”. Therefore, “wait me” must be changed into “wait for me”. If after “wait”, there are not any objects mentioned, we don’t need to add “for”.
For example:
Wait for your answer!
Wait 2 hours to buy the pizza!
Secondly, in English, we cannot say “some minutes” even though “some” have the same meaning with “several”. When talking about continuous time, we always use the word “a few” such as “a few minutes”, “a few days”, “a few weeks”. We just use “some” when mentioning about separated time. Therefore, the correct form of “wait me some minutes” should be replaced by “wait for me a few minutes
  1. Very like
According to grammatical rules, “very” just comes before adjectives or adverbs only like “very beautiful”, “I am very proud of you”… However, a large number of Vietnamese learners misunderstand and apply this word for verbs, for instance:
  • I very like him
  • I very want to meet her
  • I very love this lesson
In order to correct those wrong sentences, we can apply two following choices:
Firstly, we must replace “very” by “really”, for example:
  • I really like him
Secondly, instead of using really, we can obit “very” and add “so much”, “a lot” at the end of each sentence:
  • I love this lesson a lot
  • I love this lesson so much.
To sum up, there are still lots of common mistakes we should know to adjust as soon as possible. This post is referred from useful videos of a young foreign teacher named Dan Hauer. You can subscribe his videos on YouTube channel to have more helpful lessons.

Distinguish between British English and American English

The American use the words like (like + N/ V-ing, as + clause, or work as + N) "just", "already", or "yet" in the simple past tense, meanwhile the British often use them in the present perfect tense.
A. Differences in using words in speech
  1. The use of "just", "already" or "yet":
Americans use above words in the simple past tense, meanwhile British people often use them in the present perfect tense.
The American say: "I already had lunch." or "She didn't arrive yet"The British say: "I've already had lunch." or "She hasn't arrived yet"

  1. How to tell time
In the UK, we can say:
2:45: "Quarter to three"
3:15: "Quarter past three".
In America, time can be told:
"Quarter of three" for 2:45,
"Quarter after three" for 3:15.
  1. The American and the British also differ from parlance:
Americans use "good" instead of “well", for example: I feel good(A)= I feel well(B)
The British use "have got" or "has got" when talking about possession, while Americans use "have" or "has".
For instance, in American English, we can say: I have a new car."
But in British English, it can be said:  "I've got a new car."
- With Past Participle of GET, the American use GOT, the British use GOTTEN.
- With the verb AIM, the American use structure " to aim to + V", the British use the one " to aim at + V-ing"
For example: We aim to do something nice = We aim at doing something nice.
B. Spelling
Spelling is the factor that makes the biggest difference between the two types of English: British English and American English.
American English.British English
color, humor, flavorcolour, humour, flavour.
recognize, patronizerecognise, patronise.
Travel - traveler - travelingTravel - traveller - travelling
to practiceto practise
To understand clearly the difference between the two types of English, which is considered as "look for a needle in a haystack", we can use spelling checking tool (spell -check) on computers to create consistency in usage. However, the biggest difference is in choosing vocabularies and in pronunciation. In order to solve above problems, we can use dictionary as an effective supporting tool.
