Counselor of Information and Culture of US Embassy Terry White’s talk about YSEALI program to students at Thai Nguyen University

On November 07th, at around 2-4pm, at Resource Centre (RC) - Thai Nguyen University (TNU), happened a meaningful talk of Counselor of Information and Culture of US Embassy Terry White about YSEALI program. The conference room at RC was fully filled with 350 students from training units of TNU including School of Foreign Languages (SFL), University of Education, University of Pharmacy and Medicine, University of Information Technology and Telecommunication, etc.
The talk of Counselor Terry White includes 2 major parts which are: presenting about YSEALI program and answering TNU students’ questions. In the former one, TNU students were provided with many information as well as documents about YSEALI such as its foundation, members, activities and its support to community projects in term of economic development, environmental protection, education and civic engagement in Southeast Asia. Many exciting photos were also showed on the screen of projector so that TNU students could understand more clearly about YSEALI. Besides, he also helped us to understand about the meaning of the word "leadership". As we can remember, a leader does not mean a person who is excellent at all fields but a true leader is the one who can gather all outstanding members with different talents. A leader should be good at public speaking and should be open-minded to help others develop themselves and then a team is run very well with the support of all members in term of their sharing all types of job in a project to solve some problems and create new values together, said Counselor Terry White. In the latter one, a lot of students raised their hands and their voices to ask and give Counselor Terry White short interviews. Inspiringly, Counselor Terry White had told before that he would try to answer all the questions, even the most complicated ones. As a result, there were many interesting questions given to Counselor Terry White such as:
-What characteristics make you become a counselor as your current position? (by Thu Hang, the last year student from SFL)
-What are the similarities and differences between leaders in America and leaders in Asia? (by Thanh Huong, the last year student from SFL)
-We want to build a medicine project to cure for people at many places around the world and could you tell me how to build a project with a team and how to receive support from the program? (by a student from University of Pharmacy and Medicine)
-…
Counselor Terry White carefully answered one by one question with a sincere and truthful attitude in a very intelligent and humorous manner, which really attracted and pleased all students attending the talk.
After 2 hours sharing and answering questions related to YSEALI, the talk of Condoler Terry White finished in a warm but very TIEC NUOI atmosphere. Many students wished the talk would last longer so that they could have him explain more about the program.
And even though the talk ended, students attending that memorable and inspiring talk have all remembered what Counselor Terry White told them at the last minutes:
“Everyone is a leader in somewhere!”
He also suggested that all of us should try to practice enhancing good qualities such as good public speaking, being generous to everyone and dreaming big to become a real leader to make a better personal life and contribute to build a happier world. In addition, he also reminded us of updating about YSEALI program via its online channels so that we can know how to apply for YSEALI, how to create a team for running our project and be ready to be a member of YSEALI and then become a real leader of Southeast Asia area in the future.
