The Writing Contest Award Ceremony by ELTiCenter

With the purpose of giving rewards to winners of the Writing Contest “Tet in Vietnam”, ELTiCenter staff held a meeting at Leona Coffee, Thai Nguyen City, Vietnam on the 24th of March, 2015.
Honestly, that award ceremony happened much more interestingly than a usual appointment. In addition to sincere sharing from winners for their winning the highest prizes at the Writing Contest “Tet in Vietnam” are their own stories in learning English and their dreams in the future.

Being asked about the reason why they know the contest, they all told that they read about it on social channels of ELTiCenter like Facebook and Google+. The most amazing thing was that Thao Linh - the winner of the first prize used to be a student of Ms. Sherry Yen – Co-editor of ELTiCenter at AEA centre. Especially, Thao Linh is also the youngest participant of this contest at her age of 13. And the date that ELTiCenter awarded winners of this writing contest was the 13rd birthday of Thao Linh, which made her so excited.

The meeting continued naturally with winners’ stories about their studying English at their school. All of them agreed that extracurricular activities including English clubs, English speaking and writing contests played an important part in helping ESL students like them practise and enhance English competence.
About their dreams in the future,
Thao Linh- winner of the first prize expressed her expectation to be a student of Hanoi – Amsterdam High School on account of her belief that she would be able to develop not only her academic knowledge but also other necessary soft skills there. Moreover, winning a full scholarship to study MBA in New York, the USA is also one of her targets. Even though she is just a teenager at present, she worries that if she does not attempt to gain the best things, those who are at the same ages with her will leave her back alone.

“All my classmates now are very outstanding at present. I believe they will get a lot of success in the future, so I need to try more and more”, she said.
A bit different from Thao Linh, Hong Hue – winner of the second prize is still on the progress of thinking about giving a decision for her future career. However, she said her father expect her to be a teacher of English after graduating from School of Foreign Languages, Thai Nguyen University. Accidently, she used to gain the second prize of the “Drawing Contest” also held by ELTiCenter on last Christmas in 2014.

“Since I won the second prize of the “Lucky Drawing Contest” by ELTiCenter, I HAVE always followed ELTiCenter activities on its means of communication like Facebook Fanpage and website. I read about the “Writing Contest” last month and I attempt to write the best writing product to attend this contest and I was so happy to be the winner of the 2nd prize twice”, said Hong Hue.
Listening carefully to what everybody shared, Van Anh – writer of an essay chosen to be included in the collection of “Tet in Vietnam” by ELTiCenter also expressed her desire to improve her English writing skill. She said she was not confident enough in her skill of writing contest, so she attended this contest to practise and improve it. At present, Van Anh is a coordinator of AEA English centre, volunteer of some charity programs. Furthermore, she is also on the progress of proving herself to be one of the most prestigious leaders of ICC English Club – an English Club of Thai Nguyen university, Vietnam.
In general, the award ceremony of ELTiCenter was a meaning meeting where all people can talk friendly about themselves, their methods of learning English and their feelings to be the winners of the drawing contest, etc.
The meeting did open my mind that everybody had his and her strong point, so we had better learn from others as much as possible. It is boring to stay at home; in contrast, sometimes going out to talk to strange people and listen to their stories will change our style of living a little bit. Thanks to communicating to others, it is possible for us find out the similarities and differences between them and ourselves, which promotes us to learn the best from others and try to get over our obstacles.
Turning back to the theme of this post, after successfully organizing “Lucky Drawing Contest” and “Writing Contest”, ELTiCenter will make all effort to create more attractive programs in term of promoting teaching and learning English in Vietnam particularly and all over the world generally so that more and more ESL teachers and learners will get benefits from ELTiCenter’s activities and programs.

A warm meaningful meeting with winners of Lucky Drawing Contest by ELT iCenter

On January 13rd, ELT iCenter held a warm meeting with winners of Lucky Drawing Contest to award them certificates of ELT iCenter and the amount of money in cash in equivalent with their prizes as prescribed in the rules of the contests. Although there were 3 winners of the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd prizes, only the winners of the 2nd and the 3rd prizes attended the meeting. The winner of the 1st prizes lived in Nam Dinh, which was approximately 200 km from Thai Nguyen, so she could not come to Thai Nguyen due to her busy schedule. However, ELT iCenter did send her certificate and awards by the form of transferring at banks and sending via post offices.
About the place where the meeting happened, instead of celebrating a formal event as usual, editors of ELT iCenter decided to meet winners of the contest at Coffe Hollic in the centre of Thai Nguyen City, Vietnam to have an informal talk with winners.
10277598_829463880428975_833005587659464959_n
The meeting warmly began with an introduction about ELT iCenter. Ms. Sherry yen – Editor of ELT iCenter provided the winners with a brief background of ELT iCenter whose purposes are to promote English language teaching in Vietnam and disseminate various types of scholarships and grants as well for those who may concern.

The meeting continued with winners’ sharing about the reason why they had known about the Lucky Drawing Contest by ELT iCenter. Both of the winners of the 3rd and the 2nd prizes said that they had known about the contest via their friends. Generally, at first, the winners were a little shy. However, because of the friendly attitude of 2 editors, the winners comfortably shared with two editors of ELT iCenter about their study. Surprisingly, they were both students of School of Foreign Language, Thai Nguyen University - the same school with two editors of ELT iCenter.
The story seemed to be more exciting when two editors kept quiet to pay attention to their expressing about difficulties in learning English. Ms. Dieu – the winner of the 3rd prize mentioned that she was not confident in her ability of English language, so she found it hard to speak and communicate in English as fluently as others. Similarly, Ms. Hue – the winner of the 3rd prize faces a lot of troubles in listening to English. Both winners seemed to be diffident in themselves and were seeking for the best methods to improve their English language proficiency.
Enthusiastically, Ms. Sherry Yen gave them a lot of good advices that they can apply to practice speaking and listening to English. Concretely, Ms. Sherry Yen told her stories of learning English when she was student at SFL, TNU. I remembered she said that she did enjoy listening English via popular channels like CNN, BBC at every noon when she cooked. At first, she could not understand the content of the speeches or talks made by speakers of each program. Gradually, after regular practices, she amazingly recognized the content that speakers of CNN or BBC was making on each program and she was so happy of that. Moreover, she also introduced to winners some common English clubs for students in Thai Nguyen such as ICC English Club, Community English Club, TNUT English Club, etc so that they can come there to meet new friends and practice communicating in English with others.

And as a common rule of life, the meeting nearly came to an end even though no one wanted to leave. Two editors of ELT iCenter said that they were so glad to meet the winners and they hoped that the winners would also attend further activities held by elt icenter. Then on behalf of ELT iCenter, Ms. Sherry Yen awarded the two winners certificates of ELT iCenter and their equivalent prizes as in the contest. They both looked so happy to receive their prizes and they also promised to be regular readers who would usually update information published by ELT iCenter. *** Finally, the meeting with winners of Lucky Drawing Contest by ELT iCenter finished with a lot of regrets from both winners and editors. All wished that they would have more time to talk to each other. *** 10917134_829463973762299_6960554657087062799_n

Personally, being a part of ELT iCenter project with a position of an editor is one of the most meaningful achievements I could achieve this year. And celebrating this Lucky Drawing Contest did give us a lot of memorable experiences. We did try to make a well-running contest with all our possibilities even with the smallest things. Sis Sherry Yen and I may never forget the feeling of discussing about the rules of the contest, waiting for the time to start it and preparing carefully everything to make the video of selecting winners through the forms of drawing randomly and announcing results for the winners of the contest. Thanks to organizing the contest, we had a good opportunity to be the organizers of a contest which requires us a lot of skills like team-work, time management, writing scenario and controlling a program like real MCs on TV shows.

Survey results on personal’ opinions about the old age carried out by ELT iCenter

Recently, ELTiCenter has organized a Lucky Drawing Contest throught a survey on personal’ opinions about the old age with three following questions:
  1. At what age do you think a person is old?
  2. At what age do you think a man is old?
  3. At what age do you think a woman is old?
The questions in this “Drawing Contest” are taken from an article in AARP: The Magazine, February/ 2014.
The survey attracted many participants at various ages, mostly the young at the age between 19 and 23.
And these are the most common results summarized from participants’ answers:
A person is old at the age of: 50-55 or 60-65
A man is old at the age of: 40-45 or 50-59
A woman is old at the age of: 30-35 or 50-59
As you can see from the results above, it seems that the young are very optimistic ones who are not afraid of the old age.
Once more special thing is that most young woman at around their twenty think that they will get old at the age of around 30 and 35. (Women are a little worried about their beauty in the future, right?)

Besides all those popular answers, we did receive many interesting answers like:
A person is old at 22 when he starts a job.
A man is old at the age when he gets married
A woman is old at the age when she was born
(by Doan Minh)
A person is old at the chronological age
A man is old when his child go to High school
A woman is old when she has two children

A person is old at not any age
A man is old at not any age
A woman is old at not any age
(by bui chi , quynh huong)
A person is old when their physical health is no longer good anymore; therefore, it might depend on that person. Moreover, in our Vietnamese traditional culture, we define the "old" person, when he/she has so many life experience, and he/she becomes successful in their life.
Using number to define how old a person is not a good idea at all.
(by Vu Pham)
A person is old when they could not work anymore
A woman is old when she is no longer beautiful in the eyes of her husband
(by Bui Ngoc Huyen)
A person is old at the age of death
A man is old at the age of death
A woman is old at the age of death
(by  La Thị Quyên)
A person is old when everything is enough. Be happy and stop worrying what other people think about you! Be yourselves; stop trying to conform to what others like. To think, learn and live for yourselves and have happier stronger more fulfilling lives.
(by Nguyen Thi Mai)
A person is old when he/she stops learning - stops being a student of life.
A man is old when he thinks he is old.
A woman is old when she thinks she's old.

(by Loui Gilbert Webb )
A person is old when they can enjoy their life just by finding happiness by spending time with their family.
(by Huong Lien)
