Using games in teaching English is an effective and useful way to create a funny studying atmosphere as well as get English learners involve in the lessons. These are 10 popular and simple games that can be applied to teach different English skills for young learners:
Teaching Reading:
- Word masking
Teacher or instructor covers a word with a flap or mask. When children read a sentence in the text, get them to work out what the missing word is. Teacher can encourage them to use different cues such as meaning, letter-sound correspondence grammar.
- Bingo
Children choose from a given list of words from the story or text and write them into a bingo grid. Teacher says words or holds up words for children to cross off on their bingo sheet. Who get a complete crossed line will call Bingo. The one with the most Bingos is the winner.
Teaching vocabulary:
- Remembering pictures
Children are divided to work in 3 or 4 groups. Teacher holds several pictures related to vocabulary taught before and shows these pictures one by one. Children have chance to look at each picture for 4 or 5 seconds. When teacher finishes showing pictures, each member of those groups will go to the board in turn and write down name of a picture only. Group has most answers and complete fastest will be the winner.
- Hot Seat
Teacher splits the class into 2 or 3 teams, and then selects one person from each team to sit in the Hot Seat, facing the classroom with the board behind them. Teacher writes a word on the board. One of the team members of the children in the Hot Seat must help the children guess the word by describing it but cannot say, spell or draw the word. Continue until each team member has described a word to the children in the Hot Seat.
Teacher can use this game to teach Speaking skill too.
Teaching Grammar:
- Word Jumble Race
Teacher writes out a number of sentences, then cuts up the sentences to have a handful of words. Put each sentence into hats, cups or any objects, keeping each separate. Split class into teams of 2, 3, or 4. Teams must now put their sentences in the correct order. The winning team is the first team to have all sentences correctly ordered.
- Jumping games
This game requires a large area such as school yard. Children will stand in a line. Teacher will read a list of sentences or words, word phrases related to the structures of grammar taught before one by one. Children have to jump forward or back depending on the sentences or words, word phrases are correct or not. Who have the wrong jump will be the losers
Teaching Listening:
- Simon says
Teacher acts as Simon and stand in front of the class. Teacher says Simon says then calls name any action and acts even the actions are not fixed with what are said. Children have to listen and do the action that teacher says, not the action teacher does. Who do the wrong actions will be the losers.
- Word of Mouth
Teacher divides children into two teams. Whisper a word to a child, who must then whisper it to the child next to him or her, and so it goes until the last children in line hast to say the word out loud. If this child pronounces it correctly, the team gets a point.
A variation of this would be not to whisper to the first child but show him or her word written down on a piece of paper.
Teaching Speaking
- Facing game
This game is based on a game show on Television. Children have to stand in a circle. Teacher decides the topic and each child will have several seconds to speak out loud a word or word phrases related to the topic. If they cannot give any answer, they are out and the others will continue. The winner is the only child standing. This game is also suitable for teaching Vocabulary
- Secret Words
In this game, teacher will prepare some cards each card containing a word. Children are divided into 2 groups and each group will ask teacher a question to elicit the secret word in turn. The group can think out the word first will get 1 point. The game will continue until the last card and group has the highest point will win.
