The Writing Contest Award Ceremony by ELTiCenter

With the purpose of giving rewards to winners of the Writing Contest “Tet in Vietnam”, ELTiCenter staff held a meeting at Leona Coffee, Thai Nguyen City, Vietnam on the 24th of March, 2015.
Honestly, that award ceremony happened much more interestingly than a usual appointment. In addition to sincere sharing from winners for their winning the highest prizes at the Writing Contest “Tet in Vietnam” are their own stories in learning English and their dreams in the future.

Being asked about the reason why they know the contest, they all told that they read about it on social channels of ELTiCenter like Facebook and Google+. The most amazing thing was that Thao Linh - the winner of the first prize used to be a student of Ms. Sherry Yen – Co-editor of ELTiCenter at AEA centre. Especially, Thao Linh is also the youngest participant of this contest at her age of 13. And the date that ELTiCenter awarded winners of this writing contest was the 13rd birthday of Thao Linh, which made her so excited.

The meeting continued naturally with winners’ stories about their studying English at their school. All of them agreed that extracurricular activities including English clubs, English speaking and writing contests played an important part in helping ESL students like them practise and enhance English competence.
About their dreams in the future,
Thao Linh- winner of the first prize expressed her expectation to be a student of Hanoi – Amsterdam High School on account of her belief that she would be able to develop not only her academic knowledge but also other necessary soft skills there. Moreover, winning a full scholarship to study MBA in New York, the USA is also one of her targets. Even though she is just a teenager at present, she worries that if she does not attempt to gain the best things, those who are at the same ages with her will leave her back alone.

“All my classmates now are very outstanding at present. I believe they will get a lot of success in the future, so I need to try more and more”, she said.
A bit different from Thao Linh, Hong Hue – winner of the second prize is still on the progress of thinking about giving a decision for her future career. However, she said her father expect her to be a teacher of English after graduating from School of Foreign Languages, Thai Nguyen University. Accidently, she used to gain the second prize of the “Drawing Contest” also held by ELTiCenter on last Christmas in 2014.

“Since I won the second prize of the “Lucky Drawing Contest” by ELTiCenter, I HAVE always followed ELTiCenter activities on its means of communication like Facebook Fanpage and website. I read about the “Writing Contest” last month and I attempt to write the best writing product to attend this contest and I was so happy to be the winner of the 2nd prize twice”, said Hong Hue.
Listening carefully to what everybody shared, Van Anh – writer of an essay chosen to be included in the collection of “Tet in Vietnam” by ELTiCenter also expressed her desire to improve her English writing skill. She said she was not confident enough in her skill of writing contest, so she attended this contest to practise and improve it. At present, Van Anh is a coordinator of AEA English centre, volunteer of some charity programs. Furthermore, she is also on the progress of proving herself to be one of the most prestigious leaders of ICC English Club – an English Club of Thai Nguyen university, Vietnam.
In general, the award ceremony of ELTiCenter was a meaning meeting where all people can talk friendly about themselves, their methods of learning English and their feelings to be the winners of the drawing contest, etc.
The meeting did open my mind that everybody had his and her strong point, so we had better learn from others as much as possible. It is boring to stay at home; in contrast, sometimes going out to talk to strange people and listen to their stories will change our style of living a little bit. Thanks to communicating to others, it is possible for us find out the similarities and differences between them and ourselves, which promotes us to learn the best from others and try to get over our obstacles.
Turning back to the theme of this post, after successfully organizing “Lucky Drawing Contest” and “Writing Contest”, ELTiCenter will make all effort to create more attractive programs in term of promoting teaching and learning English in Vietnam particularly and all over the world generally so that more and more ESL teachers and learners will get benefits from ELTiCenter’s activities and programs.
