A new school opened in Ha Tinh this Spring - New Space International.
The name is unusual, and the school’s founders explain that the name reflects their dream of about “providing a new environment in which English is best taught for communication” …and where children are taught “new ways of learning and thinking, in which meaning and creativity are encouraged---rather than input based teaching and memorization commonly practiced in schools”.
The slogan of the school reflects this orientation clearly---“New Space International: New Learning, New Thinking.”
It is a privately owned, founded in Spring 2014 by two residents of Ha Tinh: Nguyen Viet Hung and Nguyen Gia Viet.
Both individuals studied abroad. Hung earned a masters degree (Pubic Administration) from the University of Hawaii, Manoa (US); Viet earned a masters degree (TESOL Studies) from the University of Queensland (Australia) and a doctorate (Applied Linguistics) from The University of Waikato (New Zealand)
Both individuals wanted to share the benefits of their international education with others and returned home to open the school to give young people in their hometown an opportunity to learn English and create an opportunity for a good future for themselves in a globalized society.
The school started in March 2014 with 19 classes; by the end of Summer 2014 close to 100 classes were offered. Five hundred students enrolled when the school first opened; enrollment has grown to close to 1000 by the end of Summer. There are now 21 teachers and 15 staff persons.
The school currently serves mostly younger students but courses for ESL adults are also beginning to be offered. School officials are also considering establishing another learning center in an industrially zoned area in the city to serve both adult and young members of the community.
The school has become an economic driver in the community, providing employment for close to fifty individuals. More importantly, the school is providing a significant educational opportunity for 1,000 young people, and later---adults in the community.
We commend Hung and Gia Viet for their commitment to “give back to their community” by establishing New Space International and creating new opportunities for learning for the people in Ha Tinh.
We congratulate them on their success; we wish them continued success.
We extend a big Mahalo (meaning: thank you---in Hawaiian) to Hung and Gia Viet for their efforts in helping the young students in their hometown! We hope your action inspires other returning Vietnamese students to follow in your footsteps and give back to their communities and share the good fortune gained.
