Thao Dang, recent graduate from Thai Nguyen University, School of Foreign Languages, has started up a Summer rural village English school project in Ha Giang Province this summer. She is serving as a volunteer English teacher and the “school” is being operated as a tuition free school. Currently 26 students are enrolled in the program in Ban Cuom Hamlet, Ta Tanh Commune, Bac Quang District in Ha Giang Province.
Ms. Thao is the first in her family to finish a university degree and the first in her village to go to a university.
She said that since she started her studies in Thai Nguyen University’s School of Foreign Languages she has wanted to do something for her community. She decided to return home and offer free classes for the young people in her home village this Summer.
She hopes to continue the project in Summer 2015 and invite two or three more volunteer student teachers from the village who are currently attending TNU to teach at her “school”.
The program is patterned after a Community English Club (CEC) project initiated in Quyet Thang commune in Thai Nguyen in Summer 2013. Funds for this project was secured by former CEC Chairperson, Ngo Thi Minh, from two retired German teachers.
Ms. Thao received a small grant from the Vietnam-Hawaii Friendship Society (VHFS) for her project.
We applaud her initiative in starting this program and wish her much success. We hope her project can be a model for other Summer rural village English schools in other provinces in Summer 2015.
