My great ESL student (student of English as a second language)!

In the scope of this post, I will mention about Giang, one of my ESL students at my English communicative class.
He is known as Minh Giang Doan, aged 23 and he is a sophomore (2nd year student) whose field of study is mechanical automation at Thai Nguyen University of Technology (TNUT).
His reason to attend my English communicative class
Giang used to be not confident in himself due to his poor English. It was not until he recognized the importance of English when he was a second-year student at TNUT that he became my student after his friend’s proposal of going to my class.
In Vietnam, the Project 2020 has been being carried out by Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam to help college students improve and reinforce their English language proficiency so as to satisfy the needs of modern society. As rules given in the Project 2020, all students need to reach a definite level of English as a compulsory output standard from A1 – C1 level to graduate from colleges and universities. Giang said to me that he needed to reach a certificate of TOEIC 450 or a certificate of TOEFL 550 to be able to graduate from university.
Besides, it is widely believed that a good employee in this age of international integration must be one who is well-qualified not only in professional knowledge but also in other necessary skills like IT, soft skills and international language skill. Therefore, he always has a desire to master English – an international language so that his chances to study abroad and to have a good career after graduating will be expanded. Actually, most current jobs require employees with good English language competence.
His praiseworthy attitude in learning English
  • His participation in classroom
Giang is a serious student who always:
  • pays attention to my lectures
  • attempts to practice reading the conversation and the text loudly
  • enthusiastically answers my questions
  • enjoys working in pair to rehearse daily conversations in English to practice English speaking skill
  • enjoys working in group to practice reading and translating English dialogues and texts
  • enjoys listening to English lessons and songs to improve English listening skill
  • enjoys taking note to save new words and structures
  • gives me a lot of questions to understand more clearly about the lesson
  • His self-study at home
Giang proves himself to be a studious ESL student by always:
  • doing homework given by me after each lesson
  • watching videos of English lessons on Youtube channel to expand his knowledge of English besides what taught by me in the classroom
  • reading documents sharing effective learning methods and useful sample of English passages to learn English on different websites
  • His attending extracurricular activities to master English
Giang goes to night library of Mr.Bill every Wednesday evening to practice speak English to foreign people and even students whose nationality is the same like his. Despite the fact that he sometimes feels downhearted when he cannot understand what Mr. Bill says due to his limited English and when he is unable to communicative fluently in English to other students, he does not give up his going to night library of Mr.Bill. He also invites other students in my class to come there with him to practice together. And it is his good point to note down what he cannot express in English and ask me for help at my class.
Recently, he is attempting to organize a small group of English learners to learn and practise English together, which amazes me a lot.
As a result for all his great efforts, his English is gradually improved now. And I do believe that if he keeps on learning with an active manner like what he is doing, he will soon become an excellent ESL student with good English language proficiency.
